 Artist Statement Jane Doe Series

My work explores the themes of Grace—divine healing—and Disgrace—shame from violation. I examine the physical, emotional, and spiritual brokenness of life, juxtaposed with divine regeneration. Using symbols like creatures, plants, and objects, I convey the darker aspects of life with a regenerative perspective.

In Against Their Will, I address the impact of sexual violence and the violation of consent, focusing on victims. This series reflects the spiritual and psychological toll of aggression, particularly as women speak out and take legal action. Each altar includes symbolic elements: a chastity belt, a rag doll with a bag over its head, and an anonymous photograph of a woman, all suggesting the violation of a sacred body.

The black chastity belts, adorned with teeth, represent mourning and rage, while the dolls, stitched from old fabric, symbolize lost innocence and nurturing. These works honor the untold stories of women who carried the burden of shame but ultimately overcame it.
